It's official: one of our most anticipated FPS games of 2017 has arrived in Early Access on Steam. You'll want to pick up a six pack of energy drinks before installing, though, because Quake Champions is as insanely fast-paced and as twitchy as you'd expect.
There are 11 different Champions to pick from in the game's current state, with at least one more to be released down the line. The game is using an interesting model that has fan opinion split -- you can either play Quake Champions completely free on full release, or you can buy the game in order to automatically access all Champions from the start.
The free players will be able to rent specific Champions with in-game currency for short periods of time, and besides those characters that are temporarily unlocked by spending Favor, the free-to-play crowd will primarily have access to the Ranger Champion.
But regardless of which option you choose, knowing each Champion's abilities and strengths is something you're going to need to know to win in the arena.
Quake Champions Characters
Everyone in a match -- even other members of your team -- are competing for weapon and upgrade resources, so you need to properly utilize the special ability of each Champion to have an edge.
There will be times where you are stuck with the basic machine gun that does minimal damage, and in a game as twitchy and deadly as this one, that's not going to cut it at all. Below we break down each Champion and how to best use their abilities.
Ranger
- Ability: Dire Orb -- The Ranger throws an orb that deals damage to any opponent it passes through. You can activate the ability again to teleport to the orb’s position. If not activated, the orb will explode one second after it hits any surface.
- Health: 100
- Armor: 25
- Speed: 320
Your base Champion is a bit squishy at only 100 health, but he does have decent speed, which is a plus if you know how to quickly reach jump pads or slipdoors. The Ranger takes less self-damage than other Champions, so don't be afraid to take that rocket launcher into 'danger close' territory.
The Ranger's ability is less about the damage it deals and more about the teleportation effects it provides, which are helpful for quickly getting out of the line of fire, or for moving across chasms and cliffs to get at fleeing enemies on the verge of death.
Quake Champions Ranger
Scalebearer
![Quake Champions Doom Slayer Lore Quake Champions Doom Slayer Lore](/uploads/1/2/3/7/123719113/180362557.png)
- Ability: Bull Rush -- Scalebearer rushes forward, dealing massive damage to any opponents he hits. While the ability is active, Scalebearer loses maneuverability but becomes much more resistant to incoming damage.
- Health: 150
- Armor: 25
- Speed: 300
This guy's a big, hulking target who will always get shot at, but if you can deck him out with extra armor upgrades, he takes longer to go down. If Scalebearer's speed increases above 400 through upgrades, he also automatically damages any enemy he touches.
Since everyone will constantly be in your face, Bull Rush can be a lifesaver, as you are pretty much guaranteed to get a kill so long as you are moderately aimed at an enemy when you activated the ability. Don't forget you are resistant to damage for a few seconds afterward as well, so use that time to get up close and personal to anyone who thought they were going to frag you.
Quake Champions Scalebearer
Visor
- Ability: Piercing Sight -- Visor activates a special cybernetic sight that allows him to see enemies through walls and other objects.
- Health: 125
- Armor: 25
- Speed: 310
With higher health and only slightly reduced speed, Visor is often a better pick than the basic Ranger class. Unlike the other Champions, he can strafe jump with no limit and will always pick up speed on every successive strafe jump, so you frequently won't get hit at all.
While there is a cool down period to prevent omniscience, the versatility of being able to see through walls can't be overstated. Unless the quad damage upgrade has spawned and you already know where everyone is going, being able to see the enemy before he sees you makes all the difference. This is especially useful if you are rocking the railgun, which requires a lot of precision. If you know an enemy is about to turn that corner, headshots become incredibly easy.
Quake Champions Visor
Anarki
- Ability: Health Injection -- Anarki instantly heals himself and receives a permanent boost to his maximum health. Anarki also receives speed boost for 5 seconds after he used an injection.
- Health: 75
- Armor: 25
- Speed: 320
Anarki's low health makes him seem useless --- until you realize his ability not only returns him to max health instantly, it also permanently increases his health for the remainder of the match.
When timed properly, this means you turn certain death into certain victory, and you will be harder to kill for the next guy. Don't forget that he can make tight turns at high speeds on his hover board to dodge out of the way of incoming fire.
Quake Champions Anarki
Nyx
- Ability: Ghost Walk -- Nyx moves into another dimension becoming invisible and immune to any damage. Nyx will instantly kill any opponent occupying her materialization spot.
- Health: 75
- Armor: 25
- Speed: 320
For the cloak and dagger crowd, there's the stealthy Nyx, who can wall jump to get across chasms or away from enemies on the ground. Get caught out in the open and you're dead, but remain mobile and you can dominate. Turning invisible to flee in the opposite direction of where an opponent thinks you are going is massively useful.
Killing an enemy by materializing on top of them is more difficult than you'd think, though, due to how fast everyone is moving and all the constant jumping and dodging. If you've come across a camper or sniper on the other hand..
Quake Champions Nyx
Sorlag
- Ability: Acid Spit -- Sorlag spits streams of acid blogs dealing damage and applying continuous poison effect to any opponent they hit. If the blob hits any surface, it will explode leaving an acid puddle. The puddle will poison any enemy that steps into it.
- Health: 150
- Armor: 50
- Speed: 290
Although she has a starting slow speed, Sorlag gets faster with each successive jump, so now there's a reason behind those players who inexplicably hop everywhere instead of running.
Acid Spit is, of course, a decent backup attack if you are having trouble hitting an opponent with your gun, but don't forget you can set it as a trap to damage anyone running through a doorway. Soften up first with the acid, then let loose with the rocket launcher to finish the job.
Quake Champions Sorlag
Clutch
- Ability: Barrier -- Clutch raises an impenetrable shield in front of itself that blocks any projectile. The shield will be deactivated for a small period of time for each shot clutch fires.
- Health: 100
- Armor: 100
- Speed: 290
Although large and bulky, Clutch has a step up over the Champions on the twitchy dodging, since the robot can dash any direction by double tapping a movement key.
Barrier is also nifty for staying alive -- especially against someone who thinks they are about to kill you instantly with the quad damage upgrade -- but don't forget the barrier fades if you fire off a round, so be sure to have something like the rocket launcher equipped when using the ability. A combo of Barrier + machine gun is actively useless, since the shield will be down the whole time you are firing.
Quake Champions Clutch
Galena
- Ability: Unholy Totem -- Galena places a totem that heals her allies and damages her enemies. The totem will vanish if an enemy triggers or destroys it. When it heals an ally it will become inactive, but reactivates when another totem is placed.
- Health: 100
- Armor: 25
- Speed: 300
Putting Galena's totem in a high-traffic area can really mess with the enemy as they have to waste time going around it or deactivating it (time during which you should be mowing them down). The cool down for her Unholy Totem ability is reduced anytime you grab a health pickup, so be on the lookout if you want to keep laying them down!
Quake Champions Galena
Slash
- Ability: Plasma Trail -- Slash can leave a plasma trail behind her. The trail deals damage to any enemy who stepped on the trail. When the ability button is pressed for the second time – the trail explodes, dealing damage to nearby enemies.
- Health: 100
- Armor: 25
- Speed: 310
Slash can dodge attacks with her crouch slide by crouching just as she lands from a jump, making it difficult to effectively aim against her. Couple that quick movement with Plasma Trail and you can make people dearly regret chasing after you.
Quake Champions Slash
B.J. Blazkowicz
- Ability: Dual Wield -- Thanks to his time spent as a duel-wielding badass in the waking realm, B.J. is able to effectively duel-wield any weapons in the game, making him twice as deadly when his active ability is triggered.
- Health: 100
- Armor: 25
- Speed: 310
B.J. has one of the most useful abilities in the game, but it isn't even a triggered effect. Just get out of combat for a few seconds and he automatically starts healing damage, which means your frag to fragged ratio will go way up, since everyone else has to look for health packs. Time your Dual Wield wisely for when an enemy can't get away, and even a lame gun like the starting machine gun can deal some serious damage.
Quake Champions B.J. Blazkowicz
Quake Doom Slayer
- Ability: Berserk -- The Doom Slayer releases his rage upon his enemies, relentlessly beating them to death with his bare hands. For 6 seconds he will pummel enemies for massive amounts of damage. If the ability is used again, Doom will lunge at his enemy for one massive blow.
- Health: 125
- Armor: 25
- Speed: 310
Wait, what now? I thought I was playing a new version of Quake and not the reboot of Doom? Yeah, turns out Bethesda being involved has an upside here, since now you get the Quake Doomguy looking just like his rebooted counterpart from one of the best shooters of 2016.
He's got high starting health, armor, and speed, so this is a good starter Champion to learn the game. The Doom Slayer can also double jump for more evasive tactics. His Berserk ability works just like in Doom, so while that means you have to get into melee range, if you do get close enough to hit, anything you touch is going to die.
Quake Champions Doom Slayer
Those are all the characters currently available in Quake Champions! Which one are you most looking forward to playing, and for those who got in on Early Access, what's your preferred Champion to use?
Everyone’s favourite high-speed gore-fest is making a return in the form of Quake Champions. After its CGI reveal at E3 2016, a gameplay trailer at QuakeCon 2016 and plenty of hours spent fragging foes in the beta, we’ve had a proper look at all of the titular Champions that will be playable when the game launches.
If you’re after more on id Software’s old school mutliplayer shooter, check out everything we know aboutQuake Champions’ release date, beta and gameplay.
The Champions themselves have both active and passive abilities that are intended to suit each of the different playing styles FPS players tend to gravitate towards. That means there’s going to be a Champion for long-range players, one for agile players who use speed to outwit their opponents and a brutish tank who can out-damage most others in the arena. Conceptually, Quake Champions sounds like a Battleborn-esque MOBA, but the gameplay trailer featuring players sprinting around the map, leaping through the air and delivering gib after beautiful gib shows that this is still very much a Quake game. Phew!
Bear in mind that all the stats and numbers given here are based on what we saw during the game’s beta and are therefore subject to change over the coming months. Without further flim-flamming, let’s go through all of Quake Champions characters:
Quake Champions: Ranger
- Name: Ranger – Slipgate Marine.
- Health (base/max): 100/100
- Armour (base/max): 25/75
- Speed: 320
- Active ability –Dire Orb: Ranger’s active ability is a glowing ball that can be thrown and then immediately teleported to. The ability is a homage to Quake’s final boss battle, where players have to perform a telefrag to slay Shub-Niggurath. No doubt telefragging with the Dire Orb will become a popular method of dispatch among pros. The Dire Orb also does damage to any foe that it passes through, making it an effective weapon in corridors.
- Cooldown: 20 seconds
- Passive ability – Son of a Gun: reduces self damage by 25%, which is ideal for rocket-jumping.
- Quake debut: Ranger made his first appearance inQuake as Quakeguy. He also reared his massive head inQuake III Arena.
In case you don’t know what this guy got up to in the first Quake game, here’s a quick bio from Bethesda. “Ranger has been fighting for his life ever since he passed through the Slipgate and into the Dreamlands two decades ago. He cut through countless horrors to find four eldritch Runes, and laid waste to the All-Mother, Shub Niggurath, which gave him access to the powerful Dire Orb.
Now, time and delirium have taken their toll, stripping Ranger of his memories and name, leaving a soldier hell-bent on survival. Only a photograph of a family he no longer clearly remembers serves to help him retain some of his hope and humanity.”
Here’s a Champion trailer showcasing Ranger’s abilities and arena style.
Here’s that Dire Orb in action for you:
Quake Champions: Visor
- Name: Visor – Cybernetic Clone.
- Health (base/max): 125/125
- Armour (base/max): 25/50
- Speed: 300
- Active ability –Piercing Sight:Visor’s special ability is essentially x-ray vision, which allows him to see through walls and spot targets without them ever knowing. This should prove especially handy for snipers and defensive players and will likely prove devastating when whoever’s using him gets their hands on a Railgun.
- Cooldown:45 seconds
- Passive ability – Grasshopper: Visor is able to strafe jump, which means he can accelerate way beyond his base speed.
- Quake debut: Visor first appeared in Quake III Arena.
Bethesda have also provided some background on Visor: “To produce the perfect infantry, Moscow’s GRU deployed cybernetics, genetics, and even cloning. The result: tireless operatives impervious to panic or pain, with “manageable” psychopathy. But their senses were dulled—especially sight. The GRU turned to a cryptic American scientist and double agent. Just 3 of 20 subjects returned, each with a grafted mask, inexplicably normal vision, and the ability to see through matter. Attempts to reverse-engineer the mask were fatal, and revealed only a layer of putrefied blood within the mask. Disposal of the casualties remains unconfirmed.
Want a Champion trailer for Visor? Of course you do, watch it below.
Here’s an excellent example of when to employ Piercing Eye:
Quake Champions: Nyx
- Name: Nyx – Fathom Agent.
- Starting health: 100
- Starting armour: 75
- Speed: 270
- Active ability – Ghost Walk: using Nyx’s Ghost Walk ability transfers her player into a new dimension, instantly and temporarily making Nyx invincible and immune to all damage. This can be used to escape tense battles, to move behind unsuspecting enemies or to shrug off damage from incoming projectiles.
- Cooldown: 40 seconds
- Passive ability – Wall Jump: not to be confused with a wall run, wall jump effectively allows Nyx to double jump in tight areas, once onto a wall, and then again after a short wall run. Its exact role is hard to pin down, but it will surely allow faster, more creative ways of traversing each arena, as well as providing the player with new ways to get the jump on their foes.
- Quake debut: Nyx is a new character to the franchise and is making her debut in Quake Champions.
Here’s some background lore from Bethesda lore Nyx and her abilities. “Harnessing the energy of the sacred Fathom Orb, Nyx’s people – the Melem – have learned how to “Ghost Walk.” By doing so they temporarily phase-shift themselves into another dimension, allowing them to bypass threats. But even the peaceful Melem call upon warriors when the need is great. As a Fathom Agent, Nyx is one of the Melem’s most skilled assassins, and an incredibly adept Ghost Walker.
“When the Fathom Orb was breached by an attacker, Nyx was sent to the Orb to stop the insurgent and prevent a non-Melem from learning the Ghost Walk ability. But as soon as she touched the Orb she was pulled out of her world and ended up in the Dreamlands, an extradimensional realm where champions from the waking world are trapped in eternal battle.”
Nyx has also got her very own trailer, which you can watch below.
Here’s an example of her Ghost Walk in action:
Quake Champions: Scalebearer
- Name: Scalebearer – Galactic Warlord.
- Health (base/max): 150/200
- Armour (base/max): 25/150
- Speed: 300
- Active ability –Bull Rush:Scalebearer’s primary ability is a sort of super-charged straight line sprint that kills everything it makes contact with. Bull Rush doesn’t quite make the player invincible, but it does reduce damage taken from incoming fire while active.
- Cooldown: 30 seconds
- Passive ability –Heavyweight: it doesn’t take Sherlock Holmes to guess that Scalebearer is a heavy chap. He’s so heavy in fact, that if you deal damage just by brushing past your enemies at high speeds or landing on them. This is only activated once you surpass 400 speed.
- Quake debut: Scalebearer is a newcomer to the series and as such is making his first appearance in Quake Champions.
Here’s the official character lore from Bethesda. “As a warlord of the marauding Greiss, he conquered countless worlds, plundering technology to strengthen his armies. But defeat by a reclusive, phase-shifting race led to his exile. Obsessed with vengeance, he discovered their power source: an ancient shrine with a seething sphere of liquid within. When at last he slaughtered its guardians and entered, the sphere consumed him – and he vanished. He awoke in a bizarre, brutal realm, transformed by arcane energy. Now he seeks a way back, to regain his command and wield his newfound might.”
Scalebearer now has his own Champion profile video, which you can watch below to see his abilities in action.
Here’s Scalebearer’s primary ability in use:
Quake Champions: Anarki
- Name: Anarki – Transhuman Punk.
- Health (base/max): 75/75
- Armour (base/max): 25/50
- Speed: 320
- Active ability – HealthInjection: Anarki’s active ability allows him to instantly heal himself and recieve a permanent maximum health boost. After using Health Injection, Anarki also gets a speed boost that lasts for five seconds.
- Cooldown: 45 seconds
- Passive ability – Hoverboard Air Control: Anarki is already one of the fastest Champions in the game, but the hoverboard means he can actually gain speed as he strafe-jumps. In addition, his hoverboard awards a special passive ability that allows players more control in mid-air to turn sharply and chase down enemies or escape those who dare follow him up a jump pad.
- Quake debut: Anarki is a returning character fromQuake III Arena. If he plays anything like he did in Quake III Arena, he’ll be one of the faster characters in Quake Champions and will frustrate players to no end.
Here’s Anarki’s official bio. “Anarki’s rebellion began with the usual self-vandalism, but he craved something greater, and found it in transhumanism. Addiction, injury, disease… Why tolerate flesh if he could replace it? Using family riches, he underwent increasingly extreme cybernetic surgeries. After a microelectrode pierced his pineal gland, Anarki perceived a surreal, alien reality breakthrough! He eagerly sought more procedures, ignoring the insomnia. Each strengthened his perception of the hidden realm. But only once he met a girl who saw it, too, was he sure he could reach it.”
Here’s a Champion trailer showcasing those abilities:
Here’s how Anarki’s Health Injection looks in use:
Quake Champions: Clutch
- Name: Clutch – Awakened Automaton.
- Health (base/max): 150/150
- Armour (base/max): 50/100
- Speed: 280
- Active ability – Barrier: what character-based shooter isn’t complete without a tank class. Clutch’s barrier can temporarily deflect all incoming damage and block enemies from passing through it. Clutch can shoot through the shield, but to stop this from being too overpowered the barrier will deactivate for a short amount of time with each shot.
- Cooldown: 40 seconds
- Passive abilities – Still Defense: Clutch gets a 20% damage reduction boost when standing still, which can be used to gain an advantage over aggressive, speedier Quake Champions characters like Slash and Anarki.Acceleration: running forward without changing direction will rapidly increase Clutch’s movement speed.
- Quake debut: Clutch is a new character making its first appearance in Quake Champions.
After some background information on this curious Champion? Here’s what id Software have provided. “It was just a mining automaton with limited AI and a force-shield to protect organics and drills. But it was the first to return from the cavern filled with floating ruins and strange markings. Its custodians transferred the data it had gathered to their master neural network. But, after analysis, the network… malfunctioned? Suddenly, Clutch was returning to the cavern as automata began killing organics. Clutch killed them, too, if they were in its path. Once at the cavern, Clutch followed the network’s instructions. A dark mass of writhing tendrils materialized. Clutch stepped into it.”
You can watch the Clutch’s Champion trailer below.
Here’s Clutch’s Barrier ability in action against Visor:
Quake Champions: Galena
- Name: Galena – Unholy Paladin.
- Health (base/max): 100/100
- Armour (base/max): 25/75
- Speed: 280
- Active ability – Unholy Totem: Galena’s primary ability lets her place a healing totem that gradually heals her and any teammates within its radius. Of course it wouldn’t be very Quake to have a straightforward healer character, so Galena’s Unholy Totem also deals lethal damage to any enemy Champion that crosses its path.
- Cooldown: 40 seconds
- Passive ability – Channeling: this passive ability lets Galena redeploy her Unholy Totem by chipping a fraction off its cooldown timer with every health bubble walked over.
- Quake debut: Galena is a new character and is making her debut appearance in Quake Champions.
Doom Slayer Wiki
Here’s some official background lore for Galena. “At just 4 years old, Galena was given to the Celebrants of Volkerh, talon-priests who shaped her into a powerful weapon. From then on, she lived in the Dreamlands. By watching and imitating her elders, Galena learned from a young age that blood is judgment and penance is sacrifice.
“Now she has grown strong, and no soul in the Arena is safe from her wrath.”
There’s also a trailer for Galena now, so you can see the Unholy Paladin at her fragging best. Watch it below.
Here’s her Unholy Totem in action:
Quake Champions: Sorlag
- Name: Sorlag – Sorg Flesh-trader.
- Health (base/max): 150/150
- Armour (base/max): 50/100
- Speed: 270
- Active ability – Acid Spit: Sorlag’s Acid Spit primary ability was shown off at PAX East 2017, and as the name suggests, it lets the player shoot acid at their foes – it’s incredibly useful for ground control and locking down pickups. Sorlag will get her very own reveal trailer and lore insight on 24 May 2017.
- Cooldown: 40 seconds
- Passive abilities – Bunny Hop: when jumping forward Sorlag moves farther than other Champions. Acid Fiend:we’re still not sure what this passive adds to Sorlag’s formidable arsenal, but judging by the name it has something to do with her active ability.
- Quake debut: Sorlag is a returning character from Quake III Arena.
Quake Champions: Slash
- Name: Slash – Roller Queen.
- Health (base/max): 100/100
- Armour (base/max): 0/25
- Speed: 310
- Active ability – Plasma Trail: Slash’s Plasma Trail primary ability lets her leave a damaging electric trail behind her wherever she goes for a few seconds. This can be used to cut off pathways or deter other players from chasing her. Better still, Slash can trigger that trail to explode on a whim, killing anything caught in its wake. It’s the ideal ability for shaking enemies off you tail or taking control of key map points.
- Cooldown: 30 seconds
- Passive ability – Crouch Slide: Slash’s passive ability lets her drop to her knees while running without losing any speed – this makes her a smaller target, but also temporarily boosts her turn speed allowing her to surprise tailing players.
- Quake debut: Slash is another Quake III Arena favourite and is making her sophomore appearance in Quake Champions.
Here’s the official background lore for Slash. “It was her grandmother’s music box. Its tiny ice-skater twirled to Swan Lake. She loved it. She couldn’t sleep without hearing its tune. Then she heard it in her dreams. Then always. She would become a skater herself. She would twirl and twirl until the music stopped. But it never stopped. She began to see dark, spidery things. When the clozapine didn’t help, she turned to heroin. In the shooting gallery she met Anarki. He saw things, too. They became inseparable, until the things they saw became real.”
Bethesda have also seen fit to give Slash her very own Champion trailer, which you can watch below.
Here’s a snippet of her Plasma Trail ability in action:

One month ago, Quake Champions entered Early Access on Steam and Bethesda's platform. Right after launch, id ran the Quake World Championships at QuakeCon, a debut tournament. James and Evan share their thoughts on the somewhat unusual return of the FPS classic.
Evan: James, my feelings for Quake Champions are complex and contradictory.
James: The game I’ve been playing since I can remember has changed, and that’s scary. Character abilities? What?
Evan: You're not the only person grappling with these changes—many Quake fans have been worried about Champions from the moment it was announced at E3 2016. Around that time we ran the headline ',' a clarification that seems hilariously unnecessary today. People were real worried about asymmetrical characters with active abilities diluting the purity of one of the highest-skill multiplayer FPSes ever. Were they right?
James: This is the first Quake with major asymmetries. BJ can temporarily dual-wield, Clutch is slow but has a deployable shield and twice the health as the speedy wall-jumper, Nyx. It’s like someone added a metagame to riding a bike.
Evan: And occasionally, those abilities do rub me the wrong way. I'll be in a rocket duel with someone playing who's Sorlag. We're dueling, dancing at high speed. She's got more HP and armor than me, but also a bigger hitbox, making it easier for me to score direct hits. Then she hits me with with her acid, and I take a bunch of unexpected damage and die. My first five hours in Champions, I was rolling my eyes a lot in those circumstances.
James: I’m not a big fan of Slash’s exploding trail of death or Scalebearer’s deadly form tackle, but that’s just because they’re unfamiliar. And in time, I might see and react to Sorlag’s acid spit as naturally as a rocket from across the map. Once I’ve internalized those changes, it’s not like I’ll have to worry about team comps or The Meta™ anyway. Form tackle or acid spit or whatever it may be, the special abilities aren’t the team-wipers of Overwatch, and their success still depends on what Quake always has: split-second decision-making and accuracy.
Evan: To me it shows that Quake's ideas are durable enough that Champions' big changes simply dent them, rather than destroy them. This is still one of the fastest-paced FPSes ever made. It's still a game about anticipating your opponent's move to the Quad Damage and using that against them to land a frag. It's still a game about the exhilaration of your hands reacting at a speed that your mind doesn't understand. All that stuff is preserved.
It's also a game about a few very specific : bunnyhopping, strafe jumping, CPMA, crouch sliding. One of the good consequences of all these unique characters is that Champions acts like a living museum of Quake and arena FPS history. If you loved Quake III, play Sorlag or Anarki. If you loved Quake IV (for some reason), play Slash.
James: And it’s this additive vocabulary of movement that makes Quake Champions so deliciously complex. The skill ceiling is plenty high. Now, I have to keep character class, movement speed, and movement abilities from the entire history of Quake in mind for myself and my opponents—all of which still hinge on accuracy and speed, of course. It’s adding unnecessary complexity and asymmetry to a series borne from absolute point-and-click purity, but we’ve been playing pure Quake for decades now. In such a saturated videogame market, I respect that id Software and Saber Interactive have handled it so deftly. I’m not sure Quake Champions is going to dethrone its predecessors, but it’s a fun, surprising iteration worthy of the name for sure.
Evan: How about those cosmetics, though?
James: They are bad. You can unlock cosmetics for your cosmetics. Sub-cosmetics. Some of them look cool, but they’re nearly impossible to recognize at a glance. I understand them as a way to keep Quake Champions free-to-play, they’re just a more awkward fit and implementation than other popular shooters.
Evan: It's an intentionally bloated system—the more stuff there is to unlock, the more time and money you have to spend earning what it is you actually want. Despite this, I still get loads of duplicates in loot crates. There are three currencies. Three tiers of loot boxes. You have to unlock torso, head, and leg pieces for each character, each of which have multiple 'attachments' you can unlock as well.
James: I really want to get the football costume for Ranger. But in order to get it, I have to get 10 lore scrolls. What are lore scrolls? In each multiplayer match, one lore scroll is randomly hidden in a breakable jug. That means that during a match you have to ignore the competition and bust pottery. We’re talking about Quake here, an FPS where you have to be ‘on’ at all times. I’m no designer, but there are so many simpler ways to handle lore scrolls and dole out cool quarterback uniforms.
Evan: The lore scrolls are a truly bizarre fit for Quake, but I think it's even more annoying that you can't buy paint schemes. Not only do you have to hope that you'll get randomly dropped a paint scheme you like, but they're character-specific—if I get 'orange' for Doom Slayer, I still have to unlock 'orange' for every other champ. Come on.
James: Anyway, I’m really enjoying Quake Champions, but my other complaint is how slow the matchmaking is at the moment. I can find a 100-person PUBG in a fifth of the time it takes to find a Champions match at times, and even then, I’m typically thrown into the ring with experts. Most of the people playing right now dropped $30 for the Early Access version, so I’d expect most players are enthusiasts at the moment. Thing is, I was raised on Quake in a safe LAN environment where everyone was near my skill level. Hopefully once it releases into the final free-to-play version, more eternal scrubs like myself will stick around to gleefully shoot one another.
Evan: Despite the microtransaction bullshit, this is one of the better arena FPSes we've had in the last decade. The maps are grim, alien, fun first-person playgrounds for skillful movement. The railgun, lightning gun, and rocket launcher has the same perfect rock-paper-scissors relationship that they did 18 years ago. Champions has also launched in an awfully good state, I think, in terms of hardware performance and features—I love that I can pick which server regions I queue into.
But like you say, James, the higher a multiplayer game's skill ceiling, the more important it becomes for that game to have a wide set of people playing it, so that everyone's able to matchmake with players of similar ability. It'll be interesting to see if Champions can attract that audience when it exits Early Access and goes free.

Release Date:
Quake Champions is an upcoming First Person Shooter from id Software and published by Bethesda Softworks. The most recent entry in the Quake series, which has otherwise been dormant since 2005’s Quake 4, Quake Champions is set to be released on PCs in 2017. Quake Champions was developed with an e-Sports sensibility in mind, and takes inspiration from other recent “hero shooters” such as Overwatch. As such, the game features a wide arrangement of playable characters with unique skillsets.
Quake Champions offers a variety of options for monetization, including purchasing and free to play options. The free to play version allows the player to use The Ranger, and purchase other heroes much like Killer Instinct. The game is not expected to launch on consoles due to hardware limitations and the focus on fast pace that demands the mouse and keyboard.
Development
At an early point in the development of Quake Champions, then going by the project title ‘Lovecraft’, the game was originally considered as an expansion to Quake Live, itself a 2010 remade version of Quake III Arena, itself a 1999 game that has remained popular on the e-Sports circuits. As they played with the expansion idea, the development of DOOM 2016 caught their attention and the title moved into becoming its own thing, with Saber Interactive being brought in to assist with development.
Quake Champions was first announced at E3 2016 with a simple debut trailer outlining the intention of being a rebirth of the arena shooter and its e-Sports focus. The game would feature a large cast of playable characters each with their own unique skill set and due to the pace of the game and e-Sports focus, was announced as a PC only title. Because they wanted to focus all their efforts on creating a multiplayer shooter, there is no single player mode in Quake Champions.
Later at Quake-con 2016, creative director Tim Willits revealed that the game would run on a hybrid engine made up of id Tech and Saber Tech, instead of id Tech 6, which powered games like DOOM 2016. The unique engine meant that Quake Champions would not see a number of features from DOOM right out of the gate, such as Virtual Reality, Vulkan API, SnapMaps and Mod support, though the latter could come later. The game entered a closed beta period on April 6, 2017 and would enter Early Access on Steam as of August 23, 2017.
Even prior to launch, id has already begun introducing new characters to the roster, announcing at E3 2017 that William ‘B.J’ Blazkowicz from the Wolfenstein series would be playable, followed by the Doom Slayer from the Doom series, revealed in August.
Gameplay
While the game is very much rooted in the lovecraftian, gothic lore of the series, there is no single player story mode in the game, as that was not what the development team wanted to focus on.
Quake Champions is a multiplayer focused, competitive arena-style, character based shooter, taking inspiration primarily from past entries like Quake 3 Arena and the character driven abilities from the MOBA genre and games like Overwatch. The game has a selection of heroes (called Champions) to choose between, all with their own passive abilities and active abilities, which we will go in depth in a bit. The abilities are based on a counter system and players will have to discover how those intermingle. Character customization will be included, such as hats.
Unlike many modern shooters, there are no loadouts, instead making players find new weapons on the battlefield. Players choose to begin with either the Machine Gun, Shotgun or Nailgun, and can find the Heavy Machine Gun, Lightning Gun, Railgun, Super Nailgun, Super Shotgun and rocket launcher around the map. And because it wouldn’t be Quake without it, there is Rocket Jumping in the game.
The game will feature leagues and ranks, and modes will include 1V1 or free for all styles. Game types include Free-For-All, Sacrifice, Duel and Team Deathmatch, while also allowing custom games between friends. There are currently 8 different maps in the game.
Characters
Quake Champions is confirmed to release with 12 different heroes, though only 11 have currently been revealed.
The Quake Ranger is the starting champion that free players will always have access to. He is the most rounded of the champions, and has the passive ability “Son of a Gun” which means he takes 20% less self inflicted damage from any weapon. His active ability, the Dire Orb, is a multifunctional projectile.
Anarki is a transhuman champion who has replaced much of his body with cybernetic enhancements. He has a passive ability of Air-control, allowing him to change his movement direction while in midair, and an active ability to immediately restore his health and add an extra point to his health pool which he can build over a match.
B.J ‘Terror-Billy’ Blazkowicz from the Wolfenstein series joins as a playable character with the passive ability Blitz, which regenerates him to the nearest quarter of his health bar when he takes damage, and an active ability to Dual Wield, both mechanics adapted from recent Wolfenstein games.
Clutch is a mining automaton gone berserk and driven into the Nightmare. Something of a tank character, Clutch has a huge pool of health and slower movement. His three passive abilities are Still Defense, where he’ll take 20% less damage while standing still, Acceleration where he’ll move faster in a straight line, and dodge where double tapping in a direction will cause him to hop in that direction. His active abilities are Barrier Shield, where he generates a spherical shield and a Mining Drill, a version of the Lighting Gun with less damage but no ammo consumption.
The Doom Slayer is the second guest champion in the game, with a look and backstory straight out of DOOM 2016. His active ability is Berserk, where like in his home game, he’ll gain increased speed and be able to punch his enemies with enough force to cause them to explode into viscera. His passive abilities include his double jump and being a silent protagonist. Yes that is an ability, because he won’t be spouting off quips, he can better conceal his map presence.
Galena is a new character, implied to be from id’s Hexen universe. The closest thing the game has to a healer, her Active is Totem, which gives teammates and herself an instant 50 point health recovery within its radius, and kills any enemy caught within. Her passive will automatically reduce her cool down timer each time she picks up health bubbles.
Nyx is from a peaceable Melem people who sent away their greatest warrior, her. Their ability to phase into another dimension momentarily, or Ghost Walk, is her Active which allows her to move undetected and invulnerable for a short time. She can wall jump as her passive, offering her some extra mobility.
Scalebearer is a hulking beast of a fighter, Warlord from the marauding Greiss. He conquered countless worlds with the active ability Bull Rush, which sends him charging forward like a steam engine, and his Passive Heavyweight allows him to damage enemies with his weight alone if he’s moving fast enough.
Slash returns from Quake III Arena, and is just as crazy as before. Her active is a Plasma Trail which can damages anyone who enters it, and she can set it to explode. Her passive is the Quake 4 Slide.
Sorlag is a proud Sorg Warrior and the best hunter in her clan, returning from Quake III Arena. Her passive Bunnyhop allows mid air control changes of momentum and her active Acid spit does an area of effect acid attack. Visor is the result of Moscow’s GRU experimentation, able to use enhanced sight despite the mask covering his face. His Active, Piercing Sight allows him to see his opponents through walls for a short time, and his passive Grasshopper allows him to strafe jump.
Note: This wiki will be updated once we have more information about the game.
